Some product tips on using emails to return inactive users back to using your product. How to ask for help and get feedback; tell your users what they miss; and provide a chance to win a prize.

Product Tips #19

👉 Ask for help

I registered on Koyfin (a financial data analysis tool) but didn’t use it. After several weeks of non-visiting the app, I got an email from the founder of Koyfin. In the email, he asked me… for help.

The subject of the email was:

Bohdan — Can you help me?

And then in the email body, he asked me to fill out the survey:

Hi Bohdan,
Rob here, founder of Koyfin, and I would like to hear from you.

You signed up for Koyfin two weeks ago and I hope you’re finding it useful to research stocks and understand market trends.

Can you spend 90 seconds to fill out the survey below? I read every single response. Your feedback allows me and our whole team to improve our product for you.

It’s an excellent approach to make your email to an inactive user personalized and ask them for help — ask what is wrong and why your product is not used.

👉 Tell your users what they miss

Another real-life example is an email from Dropbox. I registered there a pretty long period ago but mostly I’ve been using Google Drive.

The subject of the email was:

This is important: We’ve noticed that you’re not using the benefits of your Dropbox account.

The email body:

Whether you’re at your computer or on the go, Dropbox is there for you.

Dropbox on desktop

Files you add to your account’s Dropbox folder will automatically sync across all your devices. You don’t have to upload files manually.

Dropbox on the go

With the Dropbox mobile app, you can upload photos as you shoot and access them on the go.

Sync content across all devices

Any changes you make to files will sync across all your devices. You no longer have to search for the latest versions of files.

So, as we can see, they pay attention that I do not use all possible features. You can do the same in your product — determine if your user doesn’t use some (important?) feature and write to them about this. It’s a good chance to highlight your product’s best features.

👉 Provide a chance to win a prize

Let’s continue 🙂 Let me show an example from Mailgun.

The subject of the email was:

How important is deliverability?

The email body:

Hi Bohdan,

Email deliverability can be a challenge. But insights from senders like you help us gain a deeper understanding of what it takes to land in the inbox.

We’re conducting a survey to gather expertise specifically around your challenges and methods for reputation protection and list cleaning.

Participating in the survey takes less than 10 minutes and all respondents have a chance to win a $100 Amazon gift card. We’ll be compiling the results and key takeaways into a guide to share with you.

Start The Survey

Probably in this case I’d make the email subject more catching. But the email body is perfect. They ask for participating in a survey and provide the ability to win a prize.
